Mike Carson
Mike Carson received his intial musical training through the Philadelphia Public School system, starting on clarinet, later moving to the alto saxophone. While residing in Philadelphia, Mike attended the Settlement School of Music and was a member of the "Model Cities" Big Band where he began to focus on the tenor saxophone and studied with Odean Pope. It is also during this time that he began to play with various "funk bands" in the Philly area. Mike attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, La, studying with the great clarinetist Alvin Batiste. He received his undergraduate degree in Music Composition from the Berklee School of Music in Boston. While at Berklee, Mike studied with Andy McGhee, Steve Grossman and Bill Pierce. In Chicago he studied with Joe Daly.
Mike has toured extensively and when not teaching he can be caught "gigging" in and around Chicago with various groups ("Together, The Bobby Lewis Quartet and Charlie Johnson, to name a few) he can also be heard with his own group, "Positive Energy". Mike believes like Duke Ellington once stated that..."There are two types of music, good and bad... I play the good music" Mike's debut cd "Signature" is due for release in June.
