Piccolos
The Piccolo is the highest pitched member of the woodwind family that is used in orchestra and band. The word piccolo is Italian for small. This is a very fitting name considering the piccolo is half the size of a concert flute. Since the piccolo is half the size of a regular flute, the piccolo plays an octave higher than the concert flute. The piccolo also plays an octave higher than the notes that are written for it. The most well-known piece of music written for the piccolo is John Philips Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” which we have all heard on the Fourth of July.
