Clarinets

The clarinet has the largest number of members in its family out of any in the woodwind section. By far the most popular is the Bb soprano clarinet, often referred to as the “licorice stick.” The clarinet typically has a cylindrical bore with a flared bell at the lower end. It produces sound when the player forces air into the mouthpiece causing a single reed to vibrate. The clarinet is unique in that it emits a square wave when played, giving it a distinctive sound. Student clarinets are most often made of plastics, while the more advanced instruments are made from exotic woods such as Grenadilla or Ebony.
