Woodwind instruments are divided into two categories consisting of either flutes or reed instruments. Air from the player is blown onto a sharp edge or reed causing the air to vibrate and then produce an audible tone. Although the family is called woodwinds, these instrument can be made of many different materials including silver, brass, gold, plastic, and of course wood. The woodwind family has been said to be the character of the ensemble. They produce a wide range of tone qualities making them very versatile and unique.
